The Imagery from Calligraphy (2026)

What is this project?

The Imagery from Calligraphy is a computational media art project that connects Chinese seal script with the intangible craft of Xuan-paper making. The project transforms calligraphy from a written form into an interactive and immersive system, where characters become gateways into a digital cultural world.

The work consists of two mirrored components: a writing-driven interactive installation and an immersive performance film. In the installation, visitors use a 3D-tracked brush to write seal-script characters in the air. The system recognizes the character and translates it into a corresponding scene, material, or action within a virtual Xuan-paper world. Writing becomes a form of navigation; each character functions as a key to a craft process.

The immersive performance film reverses this movement. It shows how the physical world of paper-making—materials, labor, rhythm, gestures, and affect—can be condensed into the form of script. If the installation allows audiences to move from script to world, the film reveals how a world becomes script.

Based on field research at the China Xuanzhi Museum, the project structures the paper-making process into five digital zones and twenty-three seal-script targets. These elements form an experiential archive in which heritage knowledge is not simply stored, but activated through writing, movement, interaction, and imagination.
